FEATURED STORY

Last day for entries! R&D 100 deadline is 11:59 pm, May 9.

Featured Story

In response to interest from potential competitors we have made one final extension to the 2014 R&D 100 Awards Entry Deadline: May 9. That gives anyone with a new product three more weeks to prepare their entry. It is certainly time enough to prepare a new entry as well. Remember, a new product launched at any time in the calendar year 2013, it can be considered for the Awards.

NASA recreates space dust

Thumbnail

A team of scientists at NASA's Ames Research Center has successfully reproduced the processes that occur in the atmosphere of a red giant star and lead to the formation of planet-forming interstellar dust. Using a specialized facility, the scientists are now able to recreate and study in the laboratory dust grains similar to the grains that form in the outer layers of dying stars.

Method sneaks drugs into cancer cells before triggering release

Thumbnail
Biomedical engineering researchers have developed an anti-cancer drug delivery method that essentially smuggles the drug into a cancer cell before triggering its release. The method can be likened to keeping a cancer-killing bomb and its detonator separate until they are inside a cancer cell, where they then combine to destroy the cell.

Graphene photonics breakthrough promises fast-speed, low-cost communications

Thumbnail

Researchers in Australia have created a micrometer thin film with record-breaking optical nonlinearity suitable for high-performance integrated photonic devices. To create the thin film the researchers spin coated graphene oxide solution to a glass surface. Using a laser as a pen they created microstructures on the graphene oxide film to tune the nonlinearity of the material.

Study finds surprising clues about the formation of sun-like star clusters

Thumbnail
An important advance in understanding how clusters of stars like our sun are formed has been made by a team that includes seven astronomers at Penn State Univ. and two at other universities. Using data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and infrared telescopes, the astronomers have shown that earlier theories about the process that creates star clusters in giant clouds of gas and dust cannot be correct.

Wyoming is first state to reject science standards

Wyoming, the nation's top coal-producing state, is the first to reject new K-12 science standards proposed by national education groups mainly because of global warming components. The Wyoming Board of Education decided recently that the Next Generation Science Standards need more review after questions were raised about the treatment of man-made global warming.

The Safety and Sustainability Factors of Fume Hoods

Thumbnail
Fume hoods are a central component in most laboratories. Whether designing a new laboratory or renovating an existing one, architects are challenged to incorporate safety, reliability and sustainability. These same issues hold true for laboratory managers when thinking about updating their existing equipment.

Tips for Choosing In-Cabinet Fire Suppression

Thumbnail
Virtually every laboratory has areas with elevated fire risks, with fume hoods being a primary concern. The presence of ignition sources, such as hot plates and Bunsen burners, the use of pyrophoric materials and the inherent volatility of the various chemicals and compounds that are commonly found in fume hoods all add up to a serious fire risk.
