Scientists use microbes to convert human waste into space food

LONDON, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- Scientists have found a potential food source for astronauts, using microbes to convert human waste into Marmite-like food, local media reported.

According to British online newspaper The Independent, researchers at Pennsylvania State University outlined a method to break down solid and liquid waste for producing protein and fat-rich substance from human waste in their study published in the quarterly scientific journal Life Sciences in Space Research.

"We envisioned and tested the concept of simultaneously treating astronauts' waste with microbes while producing a biomass that is edible either directly or indirectly, depending on safety concerns," said Christopher House, professor of geosciences and director of the Penn State Astrobiology Research Center.

"It's a little strange, but the concept would be a little bit like Marmite or Vegemite, where you're eating a smear of microbial goo," the professor added.

Food supply is a major hurdle when planning lengthy space flights. Recycling waste into nutritious food is one solution to this problem.

According to House and his colleagues, the method involves anaerobic digestion, a process that refers to the breakdown of materials in the absence of oxygen. It is considered an efficient way of breaking down biodegradable matter.

The researcher said while their method is not ready for application yet, it provides a new model for creating food on board spacecraft.

"Imagine if someone were to fine-tune our system so that you could get 85 percent of the carbon and nitrogen back from waste into protein without having to use hydroponics or artificial light," said House.

Re letter from Astronauts on keeping Shuttle

John Warren Goerger When I resided in Everett WA my wife & I went to the Air & Space Museum in Seattle.
The Director at the time, Dr Bonnie Dunbar was talking to the public of her time with NASA, flights to the Russian space station & the Space Shuttles.
This was in the Spring of 2011, & I asked her; "Should the Space Shuttles be retired, or are they a robust space transportation system that need to remain operational?".
Dr. Dunbar's reply was, "..the Space Shuttle System is a robust system and should not be retire until NASA has a new operational human-rated space transportation system.
It is the stupidest idea to cancel the present shuttle system!"

That Fall my wife & I moved to Mesa AZ to look after my mom who had turned 100 yrs of age on August 02 2011.

We arrived on September 11 2011 in Mesa AZ. I joined the East Valley Astronomers Club of Gilbert AZ, @ later the club had as a speaker, the last Flight Surgeon on the last Shuttle flight to the International Space Station.

I asked him the same question I had asked Dr. Bonnie Dunbar. His response was the same as hers @ added; "...that almost the entire Astronaut Corps though and have stated the same thing.
Keep at least one to two Space Shuttles operational, laughing at least 1-2 missions a year until NASA has a fully operational human-rated launch vehicle..it is the dumbest idea to shut down the Space Shuttles; I totally agree with Dr. Bonnie Dunbar that the Shuttles are and the Program is a robust system. John Young

RELEASE 18-001
NASA Remembers Agency's Most Experienced Astronaut

The following is a statement from acting NASA Administrator Robert Lightfoot on the passing of John Young, who died Friday night following complications from pneumonia at the age of 87. Young is the only agency astronaut to go into space as part of the Gemini, Apollo and space shuttle programs, and the first to fly into space six times:

"Today, NASA and the world have lost a pioneer. Astronaut John Young's storied career spanned three generations of spaceflight; we will stand on his shoulders as we look toward the next human frontier.

"John was one of that group of early space pioneers whose bravery and commitment sparked our nation's first great achievements in space. But, not content with that, his hands-on contributions continued long after the last of his six spaceflights -- a world record at the time of his retirement from the cockpit.

"Between his service in the U.S. Navy, where he retired at the rank of captain, and his later work as a civilian at NASA, John spent his entire life in service to our country.  His career included the test pilot's dream of two 'first flights' in a new spacecraft -- with Gus Grissom on Gemini 3, and as Commander of STS-1, the first space shuttle mission, which some have called 'the boldest test flight in history.' He flew as Commander on Gemini 10, the first mission to rendezvous with two separate spacecraft the course of a single flight. He orbited the Moon in Apollo 10, and landed there as Commander of the Apollo 16 mission. On STS-9, his final spaceflight, and in an iconic display of test pilot 'cool,' he landed the space shuttle with a fire in the back end.

"I participated in many Space Shuttle Flight Readiness Reviews with John, and will always remember him as the classic 'hell of an engineer' from Georgia Tech, who had an uncanny ability to cut to the heart of a technical issue by posing the perfect question -- followed by his iconic phrase, 'Just asking...'

"John Young was at the forefront of human space exploration with his poise, talent, and tenacity.  He was in every way the 'astronaut's astronaut.' We will miss him."
